The £40 million redevelopment of Westfield and Hermes 150,000 sq ft Friary Shopping Centre in Guildford is now underway. Its initial £200 million redevelopment plans were vetoed by Guildford Borough Council in January but final approval for the revised development was given in March and work started shortly afterwards. The works currently underway include reconfiguring a number of the existing retail units as well as the creation of a new, high quality dining area called ‘Eat Central’. It will provide shoppers with a contemporary and stylish environment in which to eat and relax and refurbishment is schedule for completion before Christmas.
Five new lettings in the larger units have been agreed: River Island will open in 10,000 sq ft on 14th October; Urban Outfitters will open in 9,000 sq ft on 12th November; and Hollister has a 7,500 sq ft store due to open on 17th November. Topshop has extended the size of its store to 23,000 sq ft.
Negotiations are ongoing on the remaining vacant units. Schuh has just exchanged on a 4,000 sq ft store, which will open within a month, and Costa Coffee will open in 1,500 sq ft in four weeks time. Muji has just exchanged on a 2,500 store and will being fit out shortly.
